Re-Entry Permit – EN

✈️ Re-entry Permit

Foreigners holding long-term visas (such as Retirement Visa, Education Visa, Work Visa, etc.) who wish to leave Thailand while maintaining their visa status must obtain a Re-entry Permit before departure. Otherwise, the visa will automatically become invalid upon exiting the country, and a new application will be required. This poses a significant risk to those who have already obtained visa extensions or long-term visas.

⏰ Processing Time & Types

Processing Time:
Must be obtained before each departure. Can be applied a few days before departure at the Immigration Office, or on the same day at the airport before leaving.

Validity Period:
Same as the current visa. The permit does not extend the visa, it only preserves its validity.

Types:
There are two types of Re-entry Permits: Single Entry and Multiple Entry, depending on travel frequency and needs.

📄 Required Documents (if applying in person)

  • Original passport and photocopy (including visa page & entry stamp)

  • TM6 arrival/departure card (if applicable)

  • Completed TM8 form (Re-entry Permit application)

  • 1–2 passport-size photos (2 inches, depending on Immigration requirements)

  • Application fee (Single Entry: 1,000 THB / Multiple Entry: 3,800 THB, subject to official rates)

🧾 Application Methods

  • In Person:
Apply at the local Immigration Office (recommended to apply a few days before departure), or at the airport Immigration counter on the day of departure. While convenient, airport applications may involve long queues, so extra time should be allowed.

  • Through an Agent:
ALT Butler can assist with pre-prepared documents, arrange application at Immigration in advance, and provide English forms & photo services — ensuring a smoother process and avoiding last-minute rush at the airport.

Other Notes:
The Re-entry Permit only preserves visa validity, it does not extend the visa period. For long-term stays abroad, one should consider visa extension or other visa solutions as appropriate.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: I’m leaving Thailand only for a few days. Do I still need a Re-entry Permit?
✅ Yes. As long as you are holding a long-term visa (not a visa on arrival), leaving the country without a Re-entry Permit will invalidate your visa — even if you leave for just one day.

Q: Can I apply at the airport on the day of departure?
✅ Yes, but you must allow enough time. During peak season and morning flights, queues are long, so it’s best to arrive at least 3 hours in advance.

Q: I travel to Hong Kong once a month. Which type should I choose?
✅ If you frequently travel in and out, it is more cost-effective and convenient to apply for a Multiple Entry Re-entry Permit.
